The Sausalito Marin City School District Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the selection of Steven Richardson, Ed.D., as Interim Superintendent, effective October 1, 2026.

Dr. Richardson brings more than 30 years of experience in California public education, including the past 16 years with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, where he has served as Elementary Superintendent since 2022.

 

His selection followed an extensive search process that began in early July and included interviews with a community panel made up of teachers, parents, staff, and community members, followed by interviews with the Board of Trustees on September 1.

 

“We're looking forward to welcoming Dr. Richardson and greatly anticipate the opportunity his leadership brings in creating a world class school for the children of Sausalito and Marin City,” said Board President Lauren Walters.

 

Throughout the selection process, Dr. Richardson demonstrated a strong commitment to student-centered leadership, equity, belonging, community engagement, and continuous improvement. He brings extensive experience working with diverse school communities, building strong partnerships with families and educational partners, and supporting academic growth for all students.

 

Dr. Richardson shared his enthusiasm for joining our community:

“I welcome the chance to immerse myself in the SMCSD community and work alongside leaders at every level toward the common values of student centeredness, belonging and mutual accountability.”

 

Dr. Richardson will begin serving SMCSD on October 1, 2026.
