Transitional Kindergarten 2012-12

California is one of only four states to have a cut-off date between December and Jan. 1 for entry into Kindergarten. SB 1381 changes this and ensures the students entering Kindergarten will be age 5 or older at the beginning of the school year. Over the next few years, the bill will change the required birthday for admission to Kindergarten by moving the birthday requirement forward as follows:
- Kindergarteners must be age 5 by December 2nd, for the 2011-12 school year.
- Kindergarteners must be age 5 by November 1st for the 2012-13 school year.
- Kindergarteners must be age 5 by October 1st for the 2013-14 school year.
- Kindergarteners must be age 5 by September 1st for the 2014-15 school year and thereafter.
The bill will change the required birthday for admission to first grade as follows:
- First graders must be 6 by December 2 for the 2011-12 school year.
- First graders must be 6 by November 1 for the 2012-13 school year.
- First graders must be 6 by October 1 for the 2013-14 school year.
- First graders must be 6 by September 1 for the 2014-15 school year and thereafter.
Transitional Kindergarten classes will be available for Kindergarteners whose birthdays fall between September 1 and November 1. The Sausalito Marin City School District will provide continued updates as we develop a Transitional Kindergarten program.
